The complex seabed conditions and ocean environment pose significant challenges to the material selection and construction of bottom liners for offshore final disposal sites. To overcome the challenges, this study proposed a novel isolation particle layer for offshore final disposal sites. The isolation particle was composed by salt-resistant bentonite coating material and cement core material (D10 was 10 mm in core diameter and 2 mm in coating thickness; D20 was 20 mm and 4 mm). Upon immersion in artificial seawater, the isolation particles underwent expansion, leading to the formation of the novel isolation particle layers with low hydraulic conductivity less than 1 × 10-7 cm/s and adsorption of heavy metals in bentonite interlayers. Large column tests showed that both D10 and D20 isolation particle layers exhibited remarkable swelling capacity and low hydraulic conductivity (4.3 × 10-9 cm/s and 2.6 × 10-8 cm/s) under 3 m seawater pressure. During one year of observation, water tank test demonstrated that both isolation particle layers displayed remarkable stability and low hydraulic conductivity of 2.73 × 10-10 cm/s and 8.36 × 10-10 cm/s with load. The maximum adsorption capacities of salt-resistant bentonite were 123.55 mg/g for Pb2+, 60.29 mg/g for Cd2+ and 54.22 mg/g for Cu2+. Both isolation particle layers exhibited a high removal rate of over 95 % for heavy metals in water tank tests. The large-scale laboratory tests indicated the significant potential of the novel isolation particle layer for offshore final disposal sites. Subsequently, a testing ocean site will be selected to further investigate its practical engineering performance.

RESUMO

Countries participating in the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization have few options for the environmentally appropriate final disposal of municipal solid waste. Thus, sustainable practices aimed at reducing the negative effects of such a disposal on the environment are complex and hard to accomplish, since solid waste generation per capita proportionally increases as populations grow (≈ 2.7% > world average), mainly in countries inserted in Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization. Thus, demographic, socioeconomic, management, and ecological factors represented by 18 independent variables were statistically analyzed to explain waste per capita variation in Amazonian countries and sub-regions. Multiple Kruskal-Wallis tests were applied; 13 of them recorded significant results (p < 0.05). Subsequently, simple and multivariate regression analyses were carried out by taking into consideration waste per capita and significant variables. Simple regression results recorded for variables "IAC" and "Gini index" were significant (RIAC2 = 60.09%, RGini2 = 30.83%), with emphasis on "Amazon biome" (DF = 33, p < 0.01, RBiome2 = 5.34%). Multivariate models resulted in wide explainability variation, depending on the number and type of available variable (54.47% ≤ Raj2 ≤ 70.83%), with emphasis on "IAC," "Ptot," "Purb," "Wton," "Lon," Area, "HDI," "Gini," and "SDG11" (p < 0.01). In conclusion, waste per capita estimation models can present variations and geographical interdependencies due to different variables and factors that reflect the current public policies and municipal solid waste management practices.

RESUMO

Economic and technological development advances exponentially, and the implementation of new technologies in the health sector has become a source of waste for electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Electrical and electronic equipment must be replaced periodically, either due to a technological update or to improve medical treatments, which ultimately leads to the generation of this type of waste. This work aimed to conduct exploratory research on the current situation of the handling of this type of waste in Barranquilla, Colombia, considering the limited information related to the management of biomedical WEEE in the city. Sixty health care institutions (HCIs), including hospitals and clinics, odontological centres and ophthalmological centres, participated favourably in the surveys concerning the management of WEEE. Through this work, it was possible to establish a working staff level of knowledge on WEEE disposal and the framework for the management and temporary collection of this waste. Therefore, the data are useful for proposing strategies for the integral management of electrical and electronic waste in both small and large populations.

RESUMO

Heavy metal pollution, because of its high toxicity, non-biodegradability and biological enrichment, has been identified as a global aquatic ecosystems threat in recent decades. Due to the high efficiency, low cost, satisfactory recyclability, easy storage and separation, biosorbents have exhibited a promising prospect for heavy metals treatment in aqueous phase. This article comprehensively summarized different types of biosorbents derived from available low-cost raw materials such as agricultural and forestry wastes. The raw materials obtained are treated with conventional pretreatment or novel methods, which can greatly enhance the adsorption performance of the biosorbents. The suitable immobilization methods can not only further enhance the adsorption performance of the biosorbents, but also facilitate the process of separating the biosorbents from the wastewater. In addition, once biosorbents are put into large-scale use, the final disposal problems cannot be avoided. Therefore, it is necessary to review the currently accepted final disposal methods of biosorbents. Moreover, through the analysis of the adsorption and desorption mechanisms of biosorbents, it is not only beneficial to find the better methods to improve the adsorption performance of the biosorbents, but also better to explain the influencing factors of adsorption effect for biosorbents. Especially, different from many researches focused on biosorbents, this work highlighted the combination of biosorbents with catalytic technologies, which provided new ideas for the follow-up research direction of biosorbents. Finally, the purpose of this paper is to inject new impetus into the future development of biosorbents.

RESUMO

One of the main environmental issues to address in large urban areas is the ever-increasing generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) and the need to manage it properly. Despite significant efforts having been made to implement comprehensive solid waste management systems, current management methods often do not provide sustainable alternatives which ensure the reduction of solid waste generation. This paper presents an analytical methodology that employs a combination of geographic information system techniques (GIS) along with statistical and numerical optimization methods to evaluate solid waste generation in large urban areas. The methodology was successfully applied to evaluate MSW generation in different exclusive service areas (ASES) of the city of Bogotá (Colombia). The results of the analysis on the solid waste generation data in each collection area in terms of its socioeconomic level are presented below. These socioeconomic levels are explained by defining different strata in terms of their purchasing power. The results demonstrate the usefulness of these GIS and numerical optimization techniques as a valuable complementary tool to analyze and design efficient and sustainable solid waste management systems.

ABSTRACT This article deals with the generation, quantification and final disposal of the sludge generated at existing Water Treatment Plants (WTPs), operating in the state of Pernambuco. The research was carried out in the period between January 2015 and December 2016 by the collection, systematization and interpretation of data that showed 246 WTPs that generate residues, of which 69 in decanters and filters, 176 only in the filters and one in the desalination system. The largest number of conventional WTPs is in the metropolitan region of Recife and the highest production of sludge was observed in the Capibaribe river basin, which receives a load of between 50 and 50,000 kg / (m3day). It was verified that approximately 75% of the state's WTPs discard their residues in water bodies and 22% in the soil, without any kind of treatment. Only 3% perform the degassing process, yet discarding the solid mass in the soil, without any control at the final disposal of the same.

RESUMO

Three kinds of waste resulting from woods from the Colombian industry were selected (PinusPátula, Tectona Grandis and Acacia Mangium) in order to assess their energy potential. Several techniques of physicochemical characterization were used to predict the most appropriate energy exploitation process in each case; which was validated at laboratory scale by carrying out the torrefaction, gasification and combustion process. Results allowed us to the identification of the high energy potential of such wood waste as well as their feasibility to generate torrefied products and synthesis gas as products with greater added values. As a special case, the species Tectona Grandis displayed the greatest conversion and synthesis gas quality on the basis of the gasification process, due to its physicochemical characteristics. These samples can be torrefacted in order to get a new product with higher energy potential than the original sample. Experimental study carried out, allowed us to demonstrate that there is a relationship between biomass chemical composition, yield, and process products. In addition, applying an additivity law of individual effects of the component, it is not possible to predict the process performances.

RESUMO

The objectives of this research were to identify the capability of bacteria isolated from a non-active sanitary landfill to remove mercury under different saline conditions and to understand the removal kinetics. The mercury concentrations used in the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test were 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 mg/L. The capability of one selected bacterium from the MIC test to remove mercury under different saline conditions (0, 10, 20, and 30‰) was also tested. Five indigenous bacteria were isolated from the Keputih non-active sanitary landfill, Surabaya, Indonesia. The MICs of mercury for FA-1, FA-2, FA-3, FA-4, and FA-5 were 5, 10, 5, 5, and 5 mg/L, respectively. Based on biochemical characterization, FA-2 was identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The isolate of P. aeruginosa was capable of removing Hg under different saline conditions. The optimum saline condition for P. aeruginosa to remove Hg was 10‰, with a removal percentage of 99.7 ±â€¯0.18% following pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2 = 0.9939) with k2 = 2.0059 mg substrate/g adsorbent/hr. Hence, isolated P. aeruginosa showed potential for the bioremediation of mercury-contaminated areas.

RESUMO

Desorption is a method that contributes to two important aspects for the sustainability of the water treatments that involve adsorption processes: a) the regeneration of the adsorbent making it reusable in several efficient cycles and, b) the recovery of the adsorbate. In previous studies, it was shown that dolomite constituted an efficient adsorbent of phosphates from aqueous solutions. Once the adsorbent saturation is achieved, it becomes useless for further uses, generating waste, a new environmental problem if it could not be properly disposed. In this work, the main objectives were to study the phosphate desorption process for the recovery and reuse of dolomite and to evaluate the possibilities of a final disposal of exhausted dolomite for agricultural soil improvement and applying the desorbed phosphate as fertilizer. The most efficient agent for the desorption process was 1 M NH4Cl. Ultrasound evidenced a negative effect on desorption. The pseudo-second order model fitted better the experimental data and the equilibrium time was 30 min. Up to four efficient adsorption-desorption cycles were obtained. Phosphate bioavailability of exhausted dolomite was assessed with autochthonous microorganisms. The obtained extracts were used in Lactuca sativa growth experiments, establishing that they are not phytotoxic and otherwise, could promote the vegetal growth.

ABSTRACT The final disposal of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) landfill is discussed in this article in the context of environmental conflicts. From this perspective, the environmental conflict was analysed under the Puxinanã Landfill (ASP), in Paraiba, in the period from July 2009 to August 2014. Techniques were addressed and implemented, and they contributed to the analysis and understanding of environmental conflict in question, at the macro level, assisting with necessary information for decision making. The location of the ASP within hydrographic basin of the main spring that supplies the entire urban population of the municipality of Puxinanã (PB), plus the disposal of MSW of Campina Grande (PB) municipality in this landfill, aggravated the conflict. Through modeling the conflict using the Graph Model for Conflict Resolution (GMCR), some alternative solutions were identified according to the players involved and the interests of each part. In the three simulated scenarios, the construction of a new landfill for Puxinanã, as well as disposal of MSW Campina Grande in the landfill, was identified as an equilibrium for the conflict.

RESUMO

The interactions of two extremely halophilic archaea with uranium were investigated at high ionic strength as a function of time, pH and uranium concentration. Halobacterium noricense DSM-15987 and Halobacterium sp. putatively noricense, isolated from the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant repository, were used for these investigations. The kinetics of U(VI) bioassociation with both strains showed an atypical multistage behavior, meaning that after an initial phase of U(VI) sorption, an unexpected interim period of U(VI) release was observed, followed by a slow reassociation of uranium with the cells. By applying in situ attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, the involvement of phosphoryl and carboxylate groups in U(VI) complexation during the first biosorption phase was shown. Differences in cell morphology and uranium localization become visible at different stages of the bioassociation process, as shown with scanning electron microscopy in combination with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Our results demonstrate for the first time that association of uranium with the extremely halophilic archaeon is a multistage process, beginning with sorption and followed by another process, probably biomineralization.

RESUMO

This article presents informal recycling contributions made by scavengers in the surrounding area of Bantar Gebang final disposal site for municipal solid waste generated in Jakarta. Preliminary fieldwork was conducted through daily conversations with scavengers to identify recycling actors at the site, and then quantitative field surveys were conducted twice. The first survey (n = 504 households) covered 33% of all households in the area, and the second survey (n = 69 households) was conducted to quantify transactions of recyclables among scavengers. Mathematical equations were formulated with assumptions made to estimate the possible range of recycling rates achieved by dump waste pickers. Slightly over 60% of all respondents were involved in informal recycling and over 80% of heads of households were waste pickers, normally referred to as live-in waste pickers and live-out waste pickers at the site. The largest percentage of their spouses were family workers, followed by waste pickers and housewives. Over 95% of all households of respondents had at least one waste picker or one small boss who has a coequal status of a waste picker. Average weight of recyclables collected by waste pickers at the site was estimated to be approximately 100 kg day(-1) per household on the net weight basis. The recycling rate of solid wastes collected by all scavengers at the site was estimated to be in the range of 2.8-7.5% of all solid wastes transported to the site.

RESUMO

In order to obtain 85% recycling, several procedures on Automotive Shredder Residue (ASR) could be implemented, such as advanced metal and polymer recovery, mechanical recycling, pyrolysis, the direct use of ASR in the cement industry, and/or the direct use of ASR as a secondary raw material. However, many of these recovery options appear to be limited, due to the possible low acceptability of ASR based products on the market. The recovery of bottom ash and slag after an ASR thermal treatment is an option that is not usually considered in most countries (e.g. Italy) due to the excessive amount of contaminants, especially metals. The purpose of this paper is to provide information on the characteristics of ASR and its full-scale incineration residues. Experiments have been carried out, in two different experimental campaigns, in a full-scale tyre incineration plant specifically modified to treat ASR waste. Detailed analysis of ASR samples and combustion residues were carried out and compared with literature data. On the basis of the analytical results, the slag and bottom ash from the combustion process have been classified as non-hazardous wastes, according to the EU waste acceptance criteria (WAC), and therefore after further tests could be used in future in the construction industry. It has also been concluded that ASR bottom ash (EWC - European Waste Catalogue - code 19 01 12) could be landfilled in SNRHW (stabilized non-reactive hazardous waste) cells or used as raw material for road construction, with or without further treatment for the removal of heavy metals. In the case of fly ash from boiler or Air Pollution Control (APC) residues, it has been found that the Cd, Pb and Zn concentrations exceeded regulatory leaching test limits therefore their removal, or a stabilization process, would be essential prior to landfilling the use of these residues as construction material.
